March 14th – Learn Short Row Shaping – Part 5 Twin Stitch

Class Name: Learn Short Row Shaping part 5 of 5 – Twin Stitch Method

Class Date: Thursday March 14th

Class Hours: 10:00am – 12:00pm

Instructor: Terry King

Class Cost: $35 per each 2hr session or $165 for all 5 sessions when paid in advance.

Skill Level: Experienced beginner and up

Class Description: Short row shaping is a very popular technique for creating curves, angles, and depth simply by turning before the end of a row! You may have noticed that short row instructions have become increasingly common in the latest designs. I know of at least six different ways to create short rows and in this series you will learn 5 of these methods (the sixth being to turn the work and simply slip the last worked stitch to the right hand needle) by working a swatch in class. We will discuss when each method is most appropriate to use and special considerations and adjustments for different fabrics (i.e. garter stitch, ribbing, etc…) or when knitting in the round vs knitting flat.

In the first class we will practice the most common method – wrap & turn (w&t)

Subsquent classes cover these methods in this order:

Yarn Over

Twin Stitch

Material Needed:

  • Light colored yarn in worsted to aran weight – this should have a nice smooth texture and twist. Any yarn that splits easily, is softly spun, or has no give to it (like cotton) is NOT recommended!
  • Straight or circular needle in a size compatible with your yarn, sharper tips are desireable.
  • Locking stitch markers
  • Notebook & pen/pencil

Some suggested books that I will be working from

Short Row Knits: A Master Workshop with 20 Learn-as-You-Knit Projects by Carol Feller

Skills you should have: The basics of knitting and purling and you should have several projects under your belt including some knitting in the round.

Skills you will learn: How to use the five methods to create short rows in your knitting.

Homework: Make sure you have yarn and needles that you are comfortable with and can work with easily.
