May 9th & 23rd Advanced Techniques Class – Illuminated Cables – Iona Square by Lucy Hague

Class Name: Advanced Techniques – Illuminated Celtic Cables – Iona Square

Class Date: Thursdays May 9th & May 23rd

Class Hours: 4:00 – 5:00pm

Instructor: Terry King

Class Cost: $35.00

Skill Level: Intermediate and up

Class Description: Lucy Hague has come up with a lovely technique inspired by the richly decorated pages of illuminated manuscripts. Terry has selected the Iona Blanket because the squares are worked individually. In this class we will knit one or two individual squares to learn the technique so that you will have the skills to go on to knit the entire blanket on your own or select another project that uses the same technique.

The Iona blanket is assembled from individual squares, worked separately in the round from the center out and then attached with your choice of three-needle bind-off or seaming together.

Each square measures approx. 5 ½ ˝ (14 cm) along each edge after blocking. The full blanket shown in the pattern is made with 35 squares.

The pattern has both written and charted instructions which makes it a great project for learning how to read a cable chart.

Visit Lucy’s website to view other patterns that use the same technique.

Material Needed:

Pattern: Iona by Lucy Hague

  • US size 4(3.5 mm) DPNs (or needles for preferred method of working small circumferences in the round)
  • Cable needle
  • Fingering weight yarn in 2 contrasting shades:
  • For one square:
    • Yarn A: 30 yds/ (27 m)
    • Yarn B: 26 yds/ (24 m)
    • (Note: Yarn A should be slightly lighter than Yarn B, and not too strongly variegated)
  • US size 4(3.5 mm) long circular needles (optional; for working edging and three-needle cast-off)
  • Waste yarn
  • Safety pins
  • 1 stitch marker (4 if working optional edging)
  • Darning needle

Skills you should have: How to knit with double pointed needles or other needles for small projects in the round (i.e. magic loop or 2 circulars), striping in the round, slip stitch cables.

Skills you will learn: Elongated cables, striping, how to read cable chart, and potentially 3 needle bind off.

Homework: Please select all materials and have yarn wound before class time, if needed.
