September 29th – Churchmouse At Home: Basic Christmas Stockings part 1

Class Name: Churchmouse At Home: Basic Christmas Stockings Part 1

Class Date: Saturday September 29th

Class Hours: 10:00am – 12:00pm

Instructor: Terry King

Class Cost: $35 per 2 hour session

Skill Level: Experienced Beginner and up

Class Description: This will be at least a 2 session class. In this first session we will get started knitting these super simple Christmas stockings.

In the second session we will work on the toes and heels. Later another class will be scheduled in which we will embellish and decorate our stockings using any technique you like from duplicate stitch, embroidery, needle felting to sewing on items like snowflakes, sequins, stars, buttons, or found objects to create unique, one-of-a-kind décor or gifts for the holidays.

Material Needed: Churchmouse knit their stockings with Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted (190 yds/174m each) at a slightly tighter gauge for a denser fabric that will hang well once filled and keep little goodies from falling out. For specifics on ‘What They Did,’ see notes inside.

Terry knit her’s with Cascade 220. Any good worsted-weight yarn will work.

Cuff: Approx. 40 (70, 100) yds/37 (64, 91)m of worsted-weight yarn.

Leg: Approx. 70 (115, 170) yds/64 (105, 155)m of worsted-weight yarn. This is for standard lengths; you will need approx. 10 (12, 14) yds/9 (11, 13)m of worsted-weight yarn for each additional inch of knitted length.

Heel & Toe: Approx. 20 (25, 35) yds/18 (23, 32)m each of worsted-weight yarn.

Foot: Approx. 45 (75, 105) yds/41 (69, 96)m of worsted-weight yarn.

Wee: US 7 (4.5mm) double-point needles, or size to obtain gauge.

Medium & Jolly Big: US 7 (4.5mm) 16″/40cm circular and double-point needles, or size to obtain gauge.

Locking stitch markers. Blunt darning needle and bits of yarn for embroidery and trimming. Pom-pom maker. Buttons, sewing needle and thread.

Approx. 20 sts/27-28 rounds = 4″/10cm, in stockinette stitch in the round.

Pattern: Churchmouse At Home: Basic Christmas Stockings (hard copies will be available in the shop or you may purchase the download through Ravelry)

Skills you should have: You must know how to cast on, knit, purl, and be comfortable knitting in the round.

Skills you will learn: Basic sock constructions and the “After thought heel”. Later during the embellishment class you will learn various other techniques.

Homework: Purchase yarn and have it wound if needed. Swatching isn’t essential but if you know you are an unusually loose or tight knitter, please determine your needle size before class. This is best done by swatching.
